But did you know that <strong><em>ferries<\/em><\/strong> can fly, too?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a Bridge\u201d<\/strong>,<\/em> or <em><strong>Schwebef\u00e4hre<\/strong><\/em> in German, has been flying across the <strong><em>Kiel Canal<\/em><\/strong> since the early 1900s!\u00a0 The Kiel Canal, also known as the <em>Nord-Ostsee Kanal<\/em> and formerly the <em><strong>Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal<\/strong>,<\/em> connects the <em><strong>Baltic Sea<\/strong><\/em> with the <em><strong>North Sea<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 It has been allowing large ships to pass inland since the late 1800s, and from a trusted source, today the Kiel Canal has the highest traffic rate of any other artificial waterway in the world including the <strong><em>Suez Canal<\/em><\/strong> and the <strong><em>Panama Canal<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The <em>Rendsburg Schwebef\u00e4hre<\/em> opened in 1913, <strong><em>and it has been free of charge forever!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/heckerydekkerydot4ifuwerehere.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/rd-091004-001-copy-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-690\" title=\"RD 091004  001 copy 2\" src=\"http:\/\/heckerydekkerydot4ifuwerehere.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/rd-091004-001-copy-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a>photo by Wulf Hornu<\/em>ng<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The ferry which runs daily every 15 minutes from early in the morning until late evening travels at 125 meters, 410 feet, within one and a half minutes between Osterr\u00f6nfeld and Rendsburg in the German state of <strong><em>Schleswig-Holstein<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 It is suspended from a railroad bridge which also crosses the canal, and at any given time there could be a boat on the canal, a train on the bridge, and a ferry crossing as well.\u00a0 What a phenomena!\u00a0 It\u2019s enough to make you marvel!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifuwerehere.com\/to_the_sites\/italy\/sbx7w9_venice_italy.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Venice002 Traffic Jam i\" <\/strong><\/em><\/a><strong><em>traffic jam!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">You probably already know this, but a canal is a waterway built in order to move goods and carry people.\u00a0 Canals may also be used to get water to people inland and for irrigation when there is not enough water for inland crops.\u00a0 Were you aware that canals have been used for a long time, more than 5,000 years as a matter of fact?\u00a0 The city of <strong><em><a title=\"Venice\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ifuwerehere.com\/to_the_sites\/italy\/sbx7w9_venice_italy.html\" target=\"_blank\">Venice<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in Italy is famous for its many canals which are used instead of roads.\u00a0 Cars are not allowed there!\u00a0 Can you believe it?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/heckerydekkerydot4ifuwerehere.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/h-013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"h 013\" style=\"text-align:left;\">But getting back to the Schwebef\u00e4hre, it is 14 meters long (nearly 46 feet) and 6 meters wide (close to 20 feet) and travels 6 meters above the canal.\u00a0 It can carry up to 4 automobiles and up to 100 persons.\u00a0 Students rely on the flying ferry to get to and from school, too!\u00a0 How do you get to school?\u00a0 Would you like to fly to school on a
