Do you know when Labor Day started? It started on September 5, 1882, in New York City. Workers paraded because they wanted fair working conditions. It was a peaceful demonstration, and Labor Day has continued to be celebrated in the United States. It became a national holiday in June of 1894 under President Grover Cleveland, and it is celebrated on the first Monday in September.

Have a great Labor Day, and remember to share what you are doing with friends and relatives who could not celebrate with you, too! You don’t even have to make a trip to the postoffice so why are you waiting? Postcard frames for both young and old are available here: http://www.ifuwerehere.com/market_place/cards.html. And, now, you can send them in the REAL mail directly from your own celebration with your iPhone or other Smartphone!

Heckery Dekkery Dot Travel Game Postcards for Children encourages you to learn more about Labor day here!

It’s  FUN!  And, it’s EDUCATIONAL, too!

Who will win?

Everyone wins when children learn more about the world around them!

What City Is This? Heckery Dekkery Dot Travel Game Postcards for Children

“There’s a spotlight inside the Pantheon, Cousin Isabella.  No, wait, it’s a hole in the roof which lets the light come in, and it’s huge!”

That’s right, Cousin Adrian.  It is called an ‘oculus’ and it was the wonder of ancient Roman engineering.  It lights the entire building, and no other oculus in all of ancient R _ m _ came close to it in size!”

“But it’s open, Cousin Isabella!  What happens when it rains?”

“Calm down, Cousin Adrian!  The oculus has always been open.  But, since the floor is slightly curved and the drainpipes underneath the floor still function, the rain just runs off, and no one gets wet feet.”

“What an idea! That’s really cool!”

Heckery Dekkery Dot Travel Game Postcards for Children’s mini report on the Postal Service

fACEBOOK Mailbox - JUN 2103

Stilfehler – Wikimedia Commons

The Egyptians may have been the first ever to have established a postal service in 2,000 BC. WOW! That’s 4,000 years ago! And, China used riders on horses to deliver messages around 1,000 BC. How many years ago was that? That’s correct, 3,000 years!

Back in the early 1860s, the western United States also used horses to help deliver the mail. That mail service was called the Pony Express. Maybe, you have heard of it. It only lasted about a year and a half, but you read about it in many stories about the American West. You can learn more about it here.

What kinds of things do you send in the mail?

It’s astounding how a short message from grandparents, other relatives or friends can brighten a child’s day…or vice versa. “If u were here, we could do this” or “If you were here, we could do that”! Heckery Dekkery Dot Travel Game Postcards for Children Loves the Beach in the Summer!

Do you Like the Beach? Check out some of these locales for summer fun!

Charleston, South Carolina!

. . . . please don’t leave without visiting Charleston’s beaches and barrier islands where you can go swimming and build awesome sandcastles!  And, someone also said that the “fried shrimp” is worth the visit!

 Los Angeles, California!

. . . .or just relax on the sand at one of Los Angeles’ many beaches!  Wow!  There are a lot of things that we could do in Los Angeles!

 Norfolk, Virgina!

. . . .We could learn about the sea and much more at Nauticus, too.  And, since Norfolk is near the water, we could also have some fun at the beach!  At nearby Virginia Beach we could visit the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center

Does that sound like fun to you?

But don’t “wave”       goodbye just yet!

You might want to visit Chicago, Illinois, too!

Of the five Great Lakes,
on which one is Chicago situated?

A.      Lake Superior
B.      Lake Huron
C.      Lake Michigan
D.      Lake Erie
E.      Lake Ontario

The answer is C!
Chicago is situated on
Lake Michigan,  the third
largest of the Great Lakes.

Mahli and Quinnlin

. . . . Naturally, then, one of Chicago’s most natural attractions is its lakefront and the many parks which line it, and if you were here, we could explore them together!

~~~
Finally! Here is one last question before you go . . . .
The following Great Lakes are listed according to size, but one does not belong?  Which one does not belong?
A.  Lake Superior;  B.  Lake Huron;  C.  Lake Michigan;  D.  Lake Erie;  E.  Lake Ontario;  F.  Lake Inferior.
Help SOMEONE you know learn about these famous places!
Happy 4th of July from Heckery Dekkery Dot Travel Game Postcards for Children!
The Liberty Bell has long been linked with freedom and, of course, with the Declaration of Independence.
Let’s visit Philadelphia!
Legend has it, as the story goes, that the Liberty Bell cracked because it was rung so long when independence was declared on July 4th, 1776.  Today, historians highly doubt that the Bell actually rang in 1776 because the steeple which housed it in the tower of Independence Hall was in really bad condition.  The legend, however, remains to this day!  Although no one knows exactly when the Bell cracked for the first time, it is agreed that the final ringing of the Bell was on George Washington’s Birthday in 1846 when it cracked beyond repair.
What will you do on the 4th of July?
Remember to share your photos with a friend or relative at
Heckery Dekkery Dot Travel Game Postcards for Children!
Also, remember that you can now send photo postcards directly from your celebration on your iPhone, iPad or other smartphone…just in time for the 4th of July!
Hip Hip Hooray!
The Gortch Folk
The Gorch Fock
June 26, 2013, Kiel – It was a cold and rainy night. But, suddenly, there was a short break from the rain which was just long enough for me, Heckery Dekkery Dog Traveling Reporter at Large, to be walked on the pier. I knew I was a lucky dog to be a part of the 131st Kieler Woche. This year, the world’s largest sailing event would include 5,000 sailors and 3,000,000 visitors from all over the world! No one could confirm the official number of dogs attending the event, but there were some.
It was a cold and rainy night.
It was a cold and rainy night.
The next morning, the wind was blowing hard as I headed for the dock for a day journey on board the MS Nordstern. Yet again, though every once in a while the sun would peek through the clouds, it was pretty stormy!
The Gorch Folk
The Gorch Fock
Built in 1958, this oldest serving ship of the German Navy is equipped with  state-of-the-art technology, but it has no power steering! You have to use your muscles to handle both the sail and the steering! Ouch!
Welcome Naval Base Kiel ii - Fresco
Welcome!
There were BIG ships and little ships and many in-between ships. This reporting dog thinks sailing should be a breeze, but the strong wind was making this race a challenge.
May I help you?
Of course, with so many sailors, not everyone could finish first, second or third! Doing your best is always what really matters though, and these sailors were doing their best to finish in good time!
In the meantime, this dog-eared, digging reporter was happy to be warm, dry and well fed on board a nice, dry ship.
Schneeballen (snow balls) are culinary specialties of Rothenburg ob der Tauber! They are traditional pastries made of pie crust and then sprinkled with powdered sugar. And, these days, they are sometimes glazed with chocolate, sprinkled with nuts or filled with marzipan, too! Originally, they were served only on special occasions, but now they are readily available in most coffee and pastry shops so that tourists can make their visit a special occasion.
