Please take a minute today to go to my blog and watch the video which will be available between 8 AM and 8 PM EST regarding the bill Congress is due to pass next week (Stop Internet Piracy Act, SOPA, and the Protect IP Act, PIPA).  Then, let Congress know how you feel about it!  True, not everything on the internet is up to your high standards, but, and that’s a BIG BUT . . . You owe it to yourself to find out how this could affect you, too!

Wusstest du, dass Fähren fliegen können? Nein, das ist kein Märchen!

Die Schwebefähre an der Eisenbahnhochbrücke fliegt, besser schwebt, über den Nordostseekanal (international „Kiel Canal“, früher Kaiser Wilhelm Kanal) seit den frühen 1900er Jahren.

Der Kanal verbindet die Nordsee mit der Ostsee und erlaubt es seit dem Ende der 1800er Jahre auch großen Schiffen, durch das Land zu fahren und dieser Kanal hat einer zuverlässigen Quelle zufolge den stärksten Verkehr aller künstlichen Wasserwege auf der Welt, mehr als der Suezkanal oder der Panamakanal. Die Schwebefähre von Rendsburg wurde 1913 eröffnet, funktioniert bis heute und die Benutzung war immer kostenlos!

Die Fähre schwebt täglich alle 15 Minuten von frühmorgens bis spätabends über den 125 m breiten Kanal in 1 ½ Minuten zwischen Osterrönfeld und Rendsburg. Die Fähre hängt unter der Eisenbahnbrücke über den Kanal, und es kann vorkommen, dass gleichzeitig Schiffe auf dem Kanal, ein Zug auf der Brücke und die Fähre unter der Brücke fahren! Ein Phänomen, das dich sicher zum Staunen bringt!


Verkehrschaos in Venedig!

Du weißt sicher schon, dass Wasserstraßen gebaut werden, um Waren und Personen zu transportieren. Kanäle werden auch benutzt, um trockenes Land zu bewässern, damit dort Pflanzen wachsen können. Wusstest du, dass Kanäle schon seit über 5000 Jahren gebraucht wurden? Die Stadt Venedig in Italien ist für ihre vielen Kanäle berühmt, die statt Straßen benutzt werden. Autos sind in Venedig verboten! Kannst du das glauben?

Nun zurück zur Schwebefähre: Sie ist 14 m lang und 6 m breit und schwebt 6 m über dem Wasser. Die Fähre kann bis zu 4 Autos und bis zu 100 Personen befördern. Schüler benutzen die Fähre, um zur Schule und zurück nach Hause zu kommen. Wie kommst du zur Schule? Möchtest du auch gerne mit einer Fähre zu Schule schweben?

I’m sure you already know that fairies can fly, if you believe in fairies, that is . . . . But did you know that ferries can fly, too?

The Rendsburg “High Bridge”, or Schwebefähre in German, has been flying across the Kiel Canal since the early 1900s!  The Kiel Canal, also known as the Nord-Ostsee Kanal and formerly the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal, connects the Baltic Sea with the North Sea.  It has been allowing large ships to pass inland since the late 1800s, and from a trusted source, today the Kiel Canal has the highest traffic rate of any other artificial waterway in the world including the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal.  The Rendsburg Schwebefähre opened in 1913, and it has been free of charge forever!

The ferry which runs daily every 15 minutes from early in the morning until late evening travels at 125 meters, 410 feet, within one and a half minutes between Osterrönfeld and Rendsburg in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein.  It is suspended from a railroad bridge which also crosses the canal, and at any given time there could be a boat on the canal, a train on the bridge, and a ferry crossing as well.  What a phenomena!  It’s enough to make you marvel!

Venetian traffic jam!

You probably already know this, but a canal is a waterway built in order to move goods and carry people.  Canals may also be used to get water to people inland and for irrigation when there is not enough water for inland crops.  Were you aware that canals have been used for a long time, more than 5,000 years as a matter of fact?  The city of Venice in Italy is famous for its many canals which are used instead of roads.  Cars are not allowed there!  Can you believe it?

But getting back to the Schwebefähre, it is 14 meters long (nearly 46 feet) and 6 meters wide (close to 20 feet) and travels 6 meters above the canal.  It can carry up to 4 automobiles and up to 100 persons.  Students rely on the flying ferry to get to and from school, too!  How do you get to school?  Would you like to fly to school on a ferry?

Dear Santa,

Forget about a Miracle on 34th Street, this year! We need a miracle on earth! Google Earth, Santa! We have problems! There is too much dis-ease, way too much stress and way too little relaxation! Too many are dealing with chronic or terminal illnesses. And too many are harboring anger and too busy holding grudges and overreacting to entirely too many misunderstandings so that too many refuse to talk to too many! It’s enough to make you sick! “People change and forget to tell each other, Santa!” That’s a quote from Lillian Hellman, by the way! I didn’t just make it up!

Also, too . . . . Too many have no job, and too many have no place to call home! And, too many don’t have enough money to make ends meet while some have more than they could ever use which too often was made at the expense of too many! Too many wars are being fought and not only between countries either! There’s too much party politics and too little cooperation, way too many opinions and far too little honest criticism! As a matter of fact, there’s just way too much for too many of us to handle! It’s not fair! Do you have a good solution in that bag of yours, Santa? I’m listening!
