Did you know that New Year’s Day is one of the oldest holidays in the world? Most people celebrate the beginning of the New Year on New Year’s Day, but were you aware that New Year’s Day varies from culture to culture depending on the calendar that is used.
For most people, New Year’s Day is on January 1! The celebration begins the night before on New Year’s Eve with parties, fireworks, and waiting up until midnight to welcome the New Year and to kiss, to shake hands, and to greet each with shouts of “Happy New Year”! In New York City, lots of people brave the cold in Times Square to watch the ball on the top of the Times Tower descend at midnight. Then on New Year’s Day, certain foods are eaten for good luck in the coming year. Do you eat anything special on New Year’s Day to bring you good luck?
